I heart spring

It's officially spring in my book. The thermometer hits 60, and people come out of the woodwork and are suddenly all over the place outside. The sox play in their home opener, and the red sox hats and jerseys come out of the woodwork. I enjoyed being out this morning and seeing men all dressed up for work in a suit and tie, but with a sox hat on. I'm suddenly motivated to get up early, do errands that I've been putting off, and even do work after that. I was a bit of a shopper again today--I bought four dresses for Melissa & Dan's wedding in a week and a half. I haven't decided yet whether I'll layer them, or rely on my roommates to choose.

I keep hearing about this eye fungus people are getting from their contact lens solution. I don't think I'm using the blindness-causing eye juice...but eye fungus still doesn't sound like something fun. I wonder if it would look as nasty as when I cut my eyeball with a phone antenna...

(By the way, I just did a google image search for 'bloody eye' since I don't have any pictures of my own bloody eye from a few years ago...I don't recommend doing that search yourself, especially if you want to eat within the next 6 hours or so.)

I'm not a girly girl...

I don't get a rush from buying bags and shoes. Or from shopping in general. My mom is convinced that I'm not really her daughter because even at 23 she still has to drag me along if I go shopping with her.

So imagine my surprise then when I realized that I bought 5 pairs of shoes this weekend. It's not how it sounds though. You should also know that I can't make up my mind.

I need some good everyday shoes, but I can't trust myself to pick out any. So I bought three pairs, and made my roommates choose. Luckily, the ones that I was hoping would be "cool" enough won out.
I also bought some new running sneaks. My shins have been hurting when I run lately, and the last time I ran, about a week ago, they hurt so much I thought I might throw up. But since I avoid the doctor like the plague, I thought the next best thing would be to buy new shoes and see if that works. So i'm choosing between sneakers now...my main criteria is how fast they look. Just kidding. It's all about whether they'll match my shorts.

01:02:03 04-05-06

Today at three seconds into 1:02, the date was 01 02 03 04 05 06. I think that's neat. I was really looking forward to that actual moment, but then I forgot and missed it. What can you do.

So, I sort of figured out my life, at least for the next 24 hours or so. The good news is I'm no longer thinking of killing myself, which briefly ran through my head when I realized last night that that I was supposed to give a major presentation tonight, but still had to essentially start a big project that was also due tonight.

I stayed up until about 3:30am last night, and it's amazing how well I work under pressure. That paper easily could have taken me weeks if I had given myself enough time, but I wrote about 11 pages (SINGLE SPACED!) in about 5 hours, which I'm pretty sure is my record. I briefly started my presentation, and for a little while even considered not sleeping and just half-assing it today. But in the end, I realized that I could probably make a powerpoint presentation and get that all set, but the sheer logistics of making a packet of information for everyone and going to staples to get it copied, finding educator resources to display and talk about, getting a bunch of children's books to discuss, and getting materials for an activity I wanted to include just wasn't going to happen, especially without any sleep. So, I napped for a few hours and decided my presentation would just have to wait for another week.

I'm a pretty bad liar. But I was overly impressed with myself this morning when I called and left a message for my professor explaining my sickness and apologizing for screwing over her scheduling plans. I purposely called within 2 minutes of rolling out of bed, so my voice sounded all funny and I was kind of out of it. I realized at a few moments during my message that I wasn't being entirely coherent, like when I couldn't remember my phone number. Even if she doesn't believe me, I hope she at least nominates me for an Oscar next fall. Unfortunately, my second class tonight has 4 or 5 people from my first class where I will be noticably absent, so I also had to make a phone call to that professor to again explain the situation and email my paper to her....but that means that I've got the night off! I should be actually using the time to do my presentation, but we'll see. I'm tired, and I've been thinking so much today about my made up sickness that I've sort of convinced myself that I might actually have a stomach bug. I should probably just take it easy.

And that, my friends, is the run-down of my life. Consider yourself up to date.

The birthdays won't stop

Happy Birthday, Zabe!!

Today's the 25 birthday of Mrs. Geraghty. She and Molly came to visit on Friday night and it was a very fun night (at least I hope they had a lot of fun, since we were celebrating their entry into earth...). It had been a long time since we've gone out with both of them (some of you may be familiar with the notorious "oral" incident), and between Molly engaging in a fascinating conversation about the difference between sea lions and seals (he even demonstrated the differences in swimming techniques), and Zabe sitting at the front and trying to get people to show their IDs and charging people to go from one room to the other, it was a good time once again. Anyway, have a happy happy birthday, Zabe, and thanks again for coming down to visit!!!

What an interesting group we lived with on the 3rd floor of geisel house that year...

She could belt out karaoke like none other!

And here's the beautiful bride!

Happy Bday!!

oh my god

I've screwed myself over a lot of times in my 19 years as a student, since I have a real tendency to put off what can be done 1 hour before something's due. But tonight I think I outdid even myself.

I have 2 classes on Wednesday. One from 4-7, and one from 7-10. I have this really big paper/project thing due in the second class tomorrow night. Naturally, I waited until tonight to start. I figured I can get it done tomorrow, and if need be, I'll skip my 4-7 class.

No problem.

But just for kicks, cause I was getting antsy at my computer around 9:30 tonight, I decided to get up and check the date of this huge presentation I'm giving in my 4-7 Wednesday class. I was pretty sure it was one of the last 2 weeks of April, so I wanted to find out whether it was 3 weeks away, or whether it was only 2 weeks and I therefore needed to get moving. I found my assignment sheet, and there at the top I had written: April 5. And then I died. This presentation is huge. Like HUGE. Like 30-35 minutes, handing out packets of info to everyone in the class, annotated bibliography, and much more fun stuff that I don't care to go into. So now it's 10:30, and since I've spent the last hour saying more swears than I think I've ever said in my life, I have 2 projects, which, even alone, I think would be a tight squeeze to get just one done on time for tomorrow.

So now I'm debating...do I stay up most of the night and just plug through, sleep for a couple of hours in the morning and finish up before going to class, delivering a less than impressive presentation, then going to my second class to hand in my project? Or do I work for a bit tonight, sleep, and call my 4-7 professor in the morning to tell her how I've gotten this awful stomach thing going on and can't do my presentation unless she's alright with me puking on the people who sit near the front of the room? Oh my god, I think I'm going to die.

OPENING DAY

I went to the dentist this morning, and they told me nice job with the brushing, and commented that I must not be a big candy eater (really?!), and, for about the 8th time in a row, told me my wisdom teeth need come out. I can promise that my wisdom teeth will not be coming out unless they figure out a way to give me a pill that just dissolves them. But every six months we go through our little routine, where the dentist tells me that one of them is coming in (in case I didn't notice the chunk of tooth poking out?) and they hand me another referral to the oral surgeon. I should start collecting all of my referrals. Joke's on you mr. fluoride...I'm not giving you my teeth.

My trip to the dentist coincided nicely with the sox opener though, because curt schilling's house is on my way to the dentist so i wished him luck in his start (even though I know he's down in texas). So far I think it's working. Add another superstition to the list.

I noticed that lately I've been eating WAY more junk food and candy than any human being should. I think dieticians around the world would cry. Right now in the apartment we've got an outstanding selction of homemade chocolate chip pie, cake, cupcakes, jellybeans, and the standard chocolate. And it's beginning to show (see "look at that ass!" post from a few days ago). I've also been really lousy at running consistently because it's way to easy to make excuses and not go. So I decided I need something to be accountable for, and I decided that I'm going to run my first ever 5k at the end of June. I know a 5k isn't that impressive, but it definitely would be tough for me right now, and considering that I hate running, I think it'll feel like a good accomplishment to get to the point where I can actually run it and not die. And in the mean time, I'll be able to get in better shape. Plus, I used to tape my college roommate's race number from track meets to my back because I thought they were cool, and I'm really excited about getting my very own number. So yeah, that's my plan. I thought by writing it here I'll be even more likely to actually follow through with it, since now people know, and it'll be more embarrassing if I just say "screw it" and continue feeding my sugar addiction. Plus, now you can let me know if you have some good running tips to help me get in better shape!

unlocking secrets about everyone's favorite dive bar

The most amazing thing happened last night. We were at our favorite bar, BHP, last night because that's what we do on Friday nights, even when we have a bunch of people visiting. The night was going on, and Kate was still talking about the bartender she's in love with, so Molly (because she's Molly) finally took one for the team and asked him his name. And it turns out his name is....

MARTY!!!!!

Marty works here.

WIRED

The past few weddings I've been to, the bride & groom have put disposable cameras on the tables for everyone to take more pictures. Zabe sent us some good pictures last night that must've come from the cameras on our table. I think they demonstrate that we know how to have fun, and stay classy.

Kate's charming

If I had to guess, I'd guess that Molly just said "oh no you di'nt"

We know how to behave appropriately at weddings...

This one speaks for itself

I think that Zabe and Chris should renew their vows next year, and every year after, and throw another party each time....please?

Kate got a promotion at work, and tonight Gill and I made her a chocolate chip pie. Now I feel like curling up and dying. It didn't help that I bought more jellybeans today "for the apartment" (read: for myself and my jellybean problem). The sugar is only amplifying my giddiness for tomorrow, which is making it tough to get into sleeping mode. It's going to be 70 tomorrow, which makes me so happy. I have to babysit in the afternoon, but my plan is to feed Rogers as fast as I can, and then spend the afternoon strolling around Harvard Square and playing at the playground with him for a few hours, and I've very excited. And then....it's party time! It's a big "Happybirthdaywehaventseenyouinalongtimecongratsonyourpromotionwelovebeer" celebration...so if you're in town, you ought to be here. I really need to start winding down. Or run a couple of miles. Or something.

25!!!!

Wish Molly a happy birthday today!! She's a whole quarter of a century!

Molly was the only person I've known (over the age of 7) who turned their bed into a fort, and then let you hang out in it whenever you wanted. She almost always has boxed wine she wants to share, and she gives you fun cups to drink it in. And you never had to feel bad that you hadn't started a huge assignment, because Molly was usually rolling around the hallway floor laughing, and was even more screwed.

Tomorrow Molly & Zabe (who turns 25 next week!) come, and then we celebrate! :)

More than you ever wanted to know

I've got this problem buying jeans that fit. I'm oddly shaped. My friends tell me that I have no ass. That's not totally true, but it's no lovely lady hump (that song is about butts, right?). Anyway if I buy jeans that are mildly fitted around my butt, then it's too tight on my waist and looks funny. But if I buy a size bigger so it's not too tight on my waist, then it's way too baggy for my butt. So, to cut to the chase, I'm self-conscious about it, but mostly because whenever we have people over, whether I know them well at all, my roommate makes a point of saying "Look! Stacy has no ass!" whenever I get up to get something.

So today I was walking down mass ave. in central square, and had to go by a group of guys in their 20s/30s who I presumed were just sitting on the bench all day, drinking, heckling, and asking for money.

And then I heard it---music to my ears:

"Hey, look at that ass!"

I looked, and there was no one near but me. I think it was my ass getting looked it!

Totally made my day. It's about time my ass got some recognition...I knew there was some reason I downed the bag of jellybeans in 2 days.

Today---flat ass.
Two months of my jellybean program---this:

And just in time for swimsuit season.

Monday, March 27, 2006

I finished off a jar of salsa by myself in 3 days.

Driver's ed was just about the worst thing I've ever had to do. Maybe "had" isn't the right word since driving is a privilege, not a right...blah blah blah. I had the worst teacher ever...classes were beyond boring, but driving time was much worse. He'd yell, he'd make you feel stupid in front of the other people who were in the car logging their observation hours, and he had the biggest, grossest mole on the side of his neck.

I was just watching the news and they were interviewing a driving teacher about the law they're trying to pass to raise the MA driving age up a year to 17 and a half...and I started to get all nervous and fidgety and didn't know why, until they popped his name up on the screen and I realized it was my awful driver's ed teacher. Oddly, they shot him from the non-mole side of his face.

The bad boy I cruised around in when I was 16. Here it is pimped out for the last day of high school.

The weeks are flying by. I can't believe it's the last week of March. And next weekend daylight saving starts! Last night when I was drunk I decided we were having a party next weekend on Friday night in honor of Molly's visit. I invited some people in the bar. So, once I see if my roommates (and Molly) want to have a party, here's your formal invite. (roommates, molly, what do you think?)

Molly's coming! That's definitely a good reason to drink Boone's right from the bottle!

Starfish and COFFEE, maple syrup and...JELLYBEANS!

I forgot how much I LOVE jellybeans. When I was 13, the theme of my brother's and my b'nai mitzvah (that's the combination of bar and bat mitzvah since we took the twins card and did ours together, resulting in a lot less studing & stuff) was candy (go figure, right?), so all of the kids who were there got these gumball machines with their name on it which were filled with jellybeans. Prior to filling up all of the gumball machines, my parents bought pounds and pounds and pounds of jellybeans, which they stashed away in our dining room. My brother and I, as a result of growing up in our relatively junkfood-free home during childhood, became rats, poking holes in the bags and slowly eating away at the gumballs when our parents weren't there. Needless to say, I went many many years after that feeling nauseous at the sight of gumballs. Anyway, fast forward 10 years later to this week when I bought a bag at CVS since they were practically giving them away at CVS, and after I gobbled those up Gillin further fed my addiction by buying some really yummy lifesaver brand jellybeans. Those are just about gone too. Those tasty little capsules of sugar are good!!!

In other news of the week, I started drinking coffee! I get nervous about becoming an actual coffee drinker, but I don't really like the taste and it's embarrassing when I ask for 4 equals in a medium coffee, so I'm not too worried about getting my warm shot of caffeine every day and becoming someone who NEEDS their coffee (eg my two roommates). But man, once you make it sweet enough, that stuff makes you feel good! And contrary to my roommates' warnings that I better not drink coffee or they'll come home from work and find me passed out next to the wall that I ran into, I find that I can sit and really focus on my work and get a lot done. I've been wanting to be a coffee drinker for years (see http://tenpoundsofchocolate.blogspot.com/2005/02/cool-people-drink-coffee.html), but it turns out I just wasn't really putting my heart into it. I also like how it makes my hands warm when I hold the hot cup.

Tasty.....

I have to go lie down; I ate too many jellybeans :-/

Sanibel Island '06--The Story of Swam Passe

Jet Blue is the best ever. I got to watch hours and hours of A Wedding Story, Best Week Ever, and The Today Show during my flight! It was hard to even want to put my head down and try to sleep, despite having been up since before 4 that morning.

Anyway, I'm back from a great vacation. It was nice to get away for a few days, even without doing much besides going out to eat, and spending lots of time at the beach and the pool. I watched Kate take a lot of sideways pictures, and I took some of my own (mostly leveled).

I did a whole lot of this:

and this:

We did some other fun things, like drive around looking at the big houses we can never afford, even if we robbed a bank. We played a rousing game of tennis one morning, and realized we're both pretty pathetic. And we played the game, "Where are all of the people under 65?"

And also the game, "Who thought the shell lamps and this pattern is a good idea?"

One morning I got up around 7:30 and was on the beach at quarter of 8 for a run and some picture-taking. I can't think of too many things I like more than being at the beach super early.

I snuck one of these buggers home because they're so cute. He's living in my night table

And look, it came close a few times, but no one even got killed!

California here we come

I wish Phantom Planet would sing a song about Florida, so I wouldn't have to sing a screwed up version of the O.C. song on the plane all morning tomorrow. I think Kate's going to be really excited when I introduce her to it at the airport just before 5am.

I'm very excited for some sun and warm temps and not looking at school work for a week. I hate packing though. I never know what to bring. I don't know if I'll be cold when we're out at night, or if I'll feel like wearing nice clothes during the day or if I'll want to wear a t-shirt, or if I'll freeze because Kate will turn the AC as cold as it gets. So I just threw it all in my suitcase. Resulting in this:

You'd never guess that I'll be back on Friday. But if a hurricane comes, I should have enough to last at least until the 2nd week in April.

Anyway I'm off to finish up packing before it's a really really really early bedtime for me. Give me a call if you want fun presents, like shell anklets. They go really nicely with the matching necklace.

Can someone teach me a good easter song?

Easter is easily my favorite NSC (non-stacy-celebrated) holiday, for purely selfish reasons. Ramadan and Kwanzaa just don't offer anything for me. But easter...oh easter...

For starters, I laugh inside my head everytime I see houses that have hung those fluorescent eggs from strings on their trees. It just looks downright silly, there's no better word for it. Eggs on trees?? Eggs aren't supposed to be on trees! I don't see too many (or any at all) in the ol' P Square, but back near home they rule the suburbs.

But easily the reason why I love easter so much is the candy. Valentine's day candy is great, but besides the candy hearts, it's essentially the same candy that's here all year round, except in cupid shapes, or the color pink. But when easter rolls around, I find myself unable to get enough of the cadbury eggs, the malted eggs, and the peeps. Lately peeps are offered at most holidays, shaped like pumpkins or christmas trees, but there's nothing quite like the original yellow baby chicks. I don't know why they don't sell cadbury eggs year round. And I can't figure out how they get the yellow to stay in the middle and not mix with the white. Just some of the mysteries of this world, I guess.

"Peep, peep, eat me all in one sitting," is what they cry out.

I'm drooling

It's 63 degrees out right now. But...

It's 83 on Sanibel :)

Meet the new Paris Hilton

This "blond and furry" thing that resembles a lobster is one of the creepiest things I've seen in awhile.

Even creepier than our old neighbor. Judge for yourself.

Furry.

Also furry, but randomly comes over to offer us wine.

I know I certainly wouldn't want to be dipping my lobster claw in butter and have to pick out the hair.

This is what it's like to be inside my head.

I should be tired.

It's 1 am.

And I need to be up at 6:35 tomorrow. Or today actually.

But I've got 874 things going on in my head right now. I still can't figure out why my brain likes to be sedentary from 8am until 10:30pm, and then really get cranking just as I've been kicked out of my roommates' room for the third time and am finally ready to go to bed.

One week from now I'll be lying in bed on an island. I'm so so so so so excited. But for now, I'm in my winter pajama outfit of socks (non-dressy), fleece pants, a long sleeve shirt, and a short sleeve shirt. I spent the first hour of trying to fall asleep thinking about school work and other school & job related stuff. But the last 30 minutes were spent figuring out what to pack and what I'm going to wear in Sanibel. So then, since I was starting to get a little antsy from being in bed for so long, I decided 12:30 was the perfect time to start packing. But then I took one look at my drawers, and realized I've got so many tops in there that I haven't worn in over 2 years, that I've lugged from Union, to home, to Porter Square. So I thought 12:33 would be the perfect time to sort through my clothes! This is shaping up to be the most productive non-sleeping night I've had in awhile. I've got a pile going that could clothe a large family! (Large as in many people in the family, not large as in a family of morbidly obese people).

So then I thought realistically about beginning to pack, and I ran into several issues, the biggest of which is the fact that my suitcase is on the highest shelf in the pantry, and I'm pretty sure if I tried to get it down, Gillian would hear the noise and freak out about the lack of locks keeping her safe from the Somerville Scary People, and come at me with a shard of glass from her Gamma Phi cup.

Sure, she looks all chummy here, but I have a feeling she'd be pretty vicious toward an attacker.

Anyway, I made my Sanibel List of everything I need to pack, and I'm pretty sure that's the earliest I've ever made my list. I can almost guarantee though that I'll actually begin to pack around 11 next sunday night, which will be super since we have to leave for the plane around 4:30am on monday.

One week till I'm on this beach :)

Mr. Golden Sun (is stuck in my head)

Last night Caitlin took me to my first "punk rock" concert at the paradise. I saw Ted Leo & the pharmacists, and it was ok! I was a little thrown off at first when I walked in and wasn't greeted by a bunch of 17 year olds, and that's when I knew this was going to be different from a Stephen Kellogg performance.

Ted Leo was good...not really that much different from some of the stuff I'd ordinarily listen to. The opening bands though...ugh, that was a totally different story. There were three of them, and between all of those people in the bands, maybe 3 of them had washed their hair within the last 4 days. YUM.

I woke up not once, but twice last night because of a cramp in my leg. You know that feeling, where you're pretty sure it would be less painful to have your leg cut off with a chainsaw and just die from the blood loss? I don't know why, since I've avoided outside exercise (er, my only form of exercise) like the plague the last few weeks because it's been so cold out. But my leg still is sore this afternoon, so I've been in a reclining position for most of the day. Uh, yeah...that's why I've been watching the Academy Award pre-show since noon...

One week from right now I'll be beginning to throw my flip flops and tank tops and skirts into my suitcase, getting ready for vacation!! Here's what next Monday's forecast looks like on the island...
Mon Mar 13 Sunny
81°/62

This is how the forecast makes me feel.

I'm a Toys 'R Us Kid

When I was little and tried on my mom's high heels or shoes with heels at stores, I always figured I couldn't walk in them because I was too young. I figured when I got old enough to actually wear them, I would have the coordination to do so.

I'm wondering when that time will come for me. I feel like I should be able to wear a shoe that has at least some heel, but I can't do it without looking funny and feeling even funnier. I don't know if maybe I just need more practice? But I'm not sure how to go about that practice because I don't want to look stupid trying to walk around in shoes at the next wedding I go to, but Kate won't let me wear shoes in the house. It's a bit of a quandry.

We went on a shopping spree at the Christmas Tree Shops tonight, and I picked up a great find. What do you get when you mix an ab roller and the united states air force????

The U.S. AB FORCE!!!!

I fully expect to have my twelve pack by swimsuit season.

Sassy

Happy Losure Day!! Today marks 24 years since Losure began spilling liquids on innocent carpets and other stainable surfaces.

There are so many great pictures it was hard to choose.

Don't mess with Losure

Losure has many superhero-like qualities. Like his ability to liquify vegetables and then make them into burritos.

This picture creeps me out too.

Losure likes his sports. Especially when they involve beer, or Kirby Puckett

I don't think this picture needs a comment

Happy Birthday, Losure!!
